Chapter 92 - True Feelings[]

Class 3-D prepare for the cultural festival. At the end of her duty with Sawako and Chizuru, Ayane goes to Pin's office to return the keys to the equipment shed. She also asks for a university recommendation from Pin. Later on, she meets up with Kento, though reluctantly, and unable to tolerate his questions. Finally, she snaps at Kento, saying that he should not base his career path on hers. Only then does she realize that she's blaming someone again, after being told many times not to. When Kento's friend Tsuru shows up, Ayane excuses herself for a while. Afterwards, Ayane invites Kento over to her house while no one else is in. Once there, Kento asks how Ayane approaches dates, and wonders if he's different from the other guys she's dated. When she admits Kento is different, Kento loses it, begging Ayane not to leave him. He also asks Ayane to consider a long-distance relationship. But once he gets the hint that Ayane never cared that much about him, Kento gets up and leaves.

Chapter 93 - Regret[]

Ayane walks by herself in the rain, feeling guilty over what happened the night before. She happens to walk by the convenience store; Pin notices and tells her to go home, only for Ayane to yell at him. Pin decides to go back and put a transparent poncho over Ayane. He then notices Ayane put her hands over her face, clearly in much distress. Pin responds by lecturing her over how his baseball teams deal with similar situations, claiming that it's okay to regret a mistake and learn from it. After he walks away, Sawako and Chizuru come to Ayane's rescue. Despite her warning not to come near her, Ayane gets pulled away to the nearest shelter, that being Sawako's house. There, Ayane finally admits that she was dumped, because she did not care about Kento, only her chances of university. Where Sawako and Chizuru accounted for their partners when they made their career choices, Ayane didn't, and in fact made light of Kento's worry. She only accepted when Kento asked her out because he was being nice, and if she isn't serious about relationships then she should not be accepting dates. She admits to being a horrible, risk-averse person, seeing her friends happy and fulfilled in their relationships while she never has been. Chizuru claims that their friendship is no different, and that they have always liked Ayane. Sawako also claims that Ayane had been selfless before, referring back to the time when Sawako asked to become friends. Ayane always had something to say whenever her friends did something, therefore she's not as mean or horrible as she thinks she is. Chizuru says that if Ayane really felt bad about the rejection, she would know what to do next.

Chapter 94 - Myself[]

At school, Sawako meets up with Ayane and Chizuru. She admits to have felt relief when Ayane accepted the date with Kento. Kento himself is greeted by his fan club, who can tell that something happened to him, but he brushes it off. He also avoids Ayane during homeroom. Sawako and Chizuru stay behind to do accounting for the cultural festival expenses, with Kento nearby pretending to listen. Kento also brushes off the relationship like it never happened, but Sawako speaks up, saying that Ayane was truly hurt and regretful over the breakup, because Kento was nice. Kento insists the warning signs were there, like the way Ayane was holding her bag when they walked, and how she always seemed unsettled by discussions about the future, but he ignored them in the hope that Ayane would like him over time. Afterwards, on Pin's instruction, Shouta checks on Ayane. Shouta admits that Sawako doesn't talk about Ayane with him much, but would not like him if he hated Ayane. Ayane then asks about Kento, to which Shouta reveals that Kento was indeed in a bad mood. Shouta was also informed by Kento about Ayane's aim for Tokyo University. However, Ayane continues to blame herself for the action Kento took to stop her, only to realize that she wasn't trying hard enough for Tokyo University compared to her friends. As a result, she vows to study hard for her dreams. Finally, she decides to meet Kento one last time.

Chapter 95 - Thank You[]

Ayane officially calls off her relationship with Kento. Kento doesn't give up on it, saying that they can start again. Ayane says that she cannot accept a relationship if she's dependent, so she'll aim for Tokyo and go there by herself to learn independence. She would not have to worry about whether or not she'll pass, if she works hard. Ayane apologizes for not being able to return feelings for him. Kento admits that she could have refused the date in the first place, but admits that he had fun, and doesn't regret going out with Ayane. He admits that the times he didn't let Ayane speak were unforgivable, but Ayane was definitely kind at heart, and he really liked her. Kento parts with the advice that Ayane must be sure that she likes someone before going on a date with him. This somehow leaves Ayane in tears. Later on, Kento meets up with Shouta again and admits that unlike previous dates, Ayane gave valid reasons for breaking up and wasn't spontaneous about the whole thing. Meanwhile, Ayane goes to Pin's office to withdraw the recommendation request and submit another application for Tokyo University. Pin does so and tells Ayane not to regret this decision.

Author's Note[]

"This is volume 23! Most of it is about Ayane. Sorry the main heroine doesn't show up that much. I've been thinking about this part of the story for years, and I can finally draw it! I put the episodes that I thought about earlier in a scrapbook. It's a little sad to see them gradually disappearing."

Trivia[]

  • The back cover features Sawako with a satsuma mandarin[3] (Citrus unshiu). In the English publication, this design is on the book's spine.
