Chapter 60 - It's Over

Ayane and Chizuru visit Sawako on one of the days after their return from Okinawa. Chizuru continues to deny feelings for Ryu, despite his upcoming birthday. At school, however, others notice Sawako and Shouta becoming distant despite their relationship. On another day, Ayane encounters Kento's female fans and learns that Kento was there for them when their own love lives suffered. They also agreed not to date Kento. Once she sees Kento again, Kento appears to court Ayane one more time. Later on, Chizuru is tasked with delivering food to Ryu, but on the way, she cries at the prospect of ending any form of relationship with him.

Chapter 61 - That's Not True

Shouta ends up passing the food Chizuru was meant to deliver to Ryu. He also tells Ryu that Chizuru ran home. The next day, Chizuru fails to turn up to her class, and Ayane tries to contact her. Meanwhile, Kento gets "permission" from Shouta to talk to Sawako. Kento reveals that he also noticed Shouta and Sawako becoming distant with each other. He also apologizes for an earlier attempt to split Sawako off from Shouta. Kento later talks to Ayane, who admits that she deprecates herself and is only around people because she gets lonely. She leaves after Pin notices them talking. Sawako then informs Shouta that she and Ayane will pay a visit to Chizuru. Chizuru, however, happens to be by the sea, where Shouta passes the food Ryu asked to give to her. Shouta also asks why Chizuru rejected Ryu.

Chapter 62 - And Now

Ayane and Sawako spot Chizuru, who eventually admits that she skipped class to avoid seeing Ryu. Having rejected Ryu, she cries at not being able to go to his place to eat ramen or play his games. Chizuru and Ryu's past is also revealed, in which they grew up together since they were toddlers, and even Ryu's brother Tohru had shipped them. However, one incident during grade school in which a friend stepped on Ryu's rice ball, and Chizuru gave her rice balls to him, is suggested to be when Ryu began harboring feelings. During Tanabata a few years later, when middle-school-aged Ryu and Chizuru wrote their wishes, Chizuru first expressed her feelings for Tohru. On another day after that, Ryu saw Chizuru hold hands with his brother, and then ran away with Chizuru. They were promptly scolded on their return home, but given rice balls to eat.

Chapter 63 - Let's End It

The flashback to Chizuru and Ryu's past continues, starting with the day Ryu lost his mother to a car crash. Chizuru ended up crying to her mother over the event. Chizuru is cheered up with some rice balls, and later makes it her duty to walk with Ryu to school every day. One of those days has Ryu and Tohru invited to Chizuru's place for dinner. Chizuru spontaneously decided to cook rice balls that night, and ever since, has delivered them at the door to Ryu's place every day. One day, Chizuru manages to personally deliver rice balls to Ryu. They end up crying and hugging each other due their near-identical situations - Tohru had decided to leave home for college, and on the day he leaves, Chizuru promises to Ryu that she would become a sibling figure to him.

The flashback ends and Chizuru makes her mind up about ending the relationship with Ryu. She does so after giving him rice balls one last time. Ryu responds by saying that their relationship had ended a long time ago.

Author's Note

"This is volume 15! Time flies! I thought about drawing kid Chizu and Ryu on the cover, but realized that might confuse readers who don't know what's coming in the graphic novel. So I drew them normal on the cover and as kids on the title page of Episode 63. Every single day I was working on that chapter, I thought about rice balls. I'd be holding one, thinking, "This is the best food ever." You can stuff them with veggies or fish, they're good hot or cold, and they're even delicious with just salt and no filling. They really are the best food ever!"
